My name is Emily Fairfax. I am an Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Resource Management at California State University Channel Islands. I'm an ecohydrologist and study how beavers can create drought- and fire-resistant patches in the landscape. I mostly use remote sensing for my research, but still like going to the field to ground-truth beaver ponds. This is a picture my brother took of me standing on top a huge beaver dam - you can just barely see some of the beaver lodge in the background behind me. I'm participating in Science-A-Thon because I personally had no idea what kinds of environmental science jobs and careers even existed until well into graduate school. I wish I had seen more examples sooner!
