Hi! My name is April Abbott and I'm an assistant professor in Marine Science. I'm interested in sediment-water interactions and how they can inform our understanding of past climates from marine records. In this photo I was on a ship in the Southern Ocean setting up to process a sample we just collected- the sample is a short tube filled with sediments (a 'core')-but it can't be exposed to the air while we're sampling (the oxygen can change the chemistry!) so I'm putting it into a bag filled with nitrogen and will sample it using gloves built into the bag. I love sharing my science with a broader audience and Science-A-Thon is a great way to do that!
