Hello! I'm Dr Sarah Schanz, an assistant professor of geology at Colorado College. I study how rivers erode in response to perturbations, such as landslides, humans, and rock uplift. In this photo, I'm collecting a rock sample to date the landslide it sits on; this landslide blocked the West Elk Creek valley and actually caused the small creek to erode a completely new valley around it! My senior thesis students and I are trying to figure out why that happened. I'm participating in Science-A-Thon because I'm trying to break the mold of what a geologist looks like!
